| 1979 - The first special edition and further improvements
Although Alfa Romeo has been offering a 84 bhp version of the Alfasud
since 1978, the suspension of the Alfasud would not have any
problem with
some more cavalli under the bonnet. The German Alfa dealer and tuner Dieter Gleich solves
this problem in 1979 by using two large Weber 40 IDF 42 A / 40 IDF 43 A twin-choke downdraft carburettors
and so creates the first special edition of the Alfasud which is officially
sold in Germany. The result of the tuning are 106 bhp. This engine is available
in the Alfasud ti 1.5 106
PS special edition. The Alfasud Sprint can also be ordered as "106 PS
Sondermodell". Both are officially sold by Alfa Romeo dealers in Germany. With
106 "cavalli" Alfasud ti and Alfasud Sprint reach a top speed of 185 kph. Unfortunately
Alfa Romeo in Italy raises the power
output of the Alfasud Sprint engines in the same year. So the Gleich-Alfasuds
do not become a great commercial success. For their new more powerful engines,
the Alfa Romeo engineers follow the old Alfa-doctrine of "one carburettor per cylinder".
So the new 1.3 Veloce and 1.5 Veloce have two Weber
36 IDF 44 / 36 IDF 45 twin-choke downdraft carburettors. The camshaft-timing and the ignition
of those two engines are also modified. The result
are 86 bhp at the 1351 cm³ engine and 95 bhp at the 1490 cm³
engine. This means 9 % more at the 1.3 and 12 % more at the 1.5 compared
to their predecessor with only one twin-choke downdraft carburettor. With
the introduction of the Veloce versions, an additional bearing is added
to
the engine which connects the left cylinder head with the body. The old
1.3 litre disappears out of the catalogues at once while the Alfasud Sprint
1.5 with 84 bhp can live on till 1980.

1980 - Facelift for the Alfasud and Alfasud Ti
We have the year 1980 - a new decade as begun. It will be the decade
of dim black plastic. Alfa Romeo recognises this trend and
facelifts the
Alfasud for the second time. New front wings and a new boot lid offer room for larger indicator flashes and rear lights. The tin-bumpers are replaced
by larger ones made of plastic. A small air-dam which is integrated into
the front bumper improves the aerodynamics of the Alfasud. At the front
there are new larger indicator flashes, modified headlights and a new radiator
grille. The appearance of the rear of the Alfasud has been altered by new
larger rear lights. A part of them is integrated into the boot lid. Dim
black door handles and protection strips on the doors, new signs and the
missing chrome-strip along the boot lid are further details of the new
Alfasud-generation. The interior shows even more
modifications. An entirely new dashboard with air vents in the middle and
separate windscreen-defroster vents is installed into the series III Alfasud.
Then there is a digital clock in the middle of the dashboard. A rear fog
light is added to the standard equipment. The very

first series III Alfasuds
were delivered with the old series II
dashboard, the RHD-versions of 1980 were nearly all equipped with the old
one. Larger and more comfortable seats improve the comfort. There are now to
different 1.2 litre
versions.
Besides a series III version which has all the trim and improvements of the more
powerful 1.3 and 1.5 litre versions, there is a base version which still has the
old Alfasud rims instead of the new steel rims whose design was adapted from the Giulietta 116
which are now standart on 1.3 and 1.5 litre versions. The old series II dashboard is another detail which remains alive in
this Alfasud 1.2. The more modern 1.2 is available with four and five speeds. The four-speed
version has one Solex C32 DISA/21 carburettor and develops 63 bhp while
the five-speed version has a Weber 32 DIR 61/250 twin-choke carburettor
and 68 bhp. The Alfasud 1.3 and 1.5 now both have a Weber 32 DIR 61/250
twin-choke carburettor which raises the power to 79 in the 1.3 and 84 bhp
in the 1.5. The German Alfasud 1.3 is stated with 75 bhp in order to keep
in a cheaper insurance-class. A short time after the Berlina had been
facelifted, Alfa Romeo also facelifts the Ti. it now has black wheel arch
extensions made of plastic and an again enlarged rear spoiler. With the
launch of the series III Alfasud Ti, the letters Ti are written with a
capital T. The interior of the Ti shows two differences if you compare
it to the four- door Alfasud. There are two extra gauges in the centre console and a different steering wheel. The Ti is available
as 1.3 with 86 bhp and as 1.5 with 95 bhp. Both engines have the same specifications
as the Alfasud Sprint Veloce engines. The Tis are equipped with a breaker-less
ignition.
In the UK, Alfa Romeo dealers offer a special edition of the Alfasud
ti series II. It is called the Alfasud Ti 'S'.
For the amount of £ 4600 one buys a special version of the ti 1.5,
which mixes elements (i.e. the
bumpers) of the Ti series III with the body of the ti series II. At the
end of the year 1980 the Alfasud 1.2 5m Valentino
with 68 bhp is offered in Italy. Later it will be also sold with a 1351
cm³ engine (79 bhp) and 1490 cm³ engine. The 1.3 Valentino and
the 1.5 Valentino are also available in other countries.
Autodelta produces some Alfasud ti Trofeo.
